Fourteen Class 3751 'Heavy Mountain'/ 'Northern' 4-8-4 steam locomotives were built for that ATSF by Baldwin Locomotive Works in the late 1920s. The class were the ATSF's first 4-8-4 type and test showed that they were 20% more efficient and powerful than the existing 4-8-2 'Mountain' locomotives. No. 3751 hit a highest recorded speed of 103 mph in 1941, after receiving major upgrades along with other 4-8-4 locos in that year. The 4-8-4s proved to be very reliable in service and lasted until the mid 1950s in revenue earning service. A duo of 3751 class locomotives made it into preservation, one of which is located at the Redondo Junction, California with the other at Kingman, Arizona.
