Shinkansen 0 series 'Bullet Train' Profile and Models

The Shinkansen 0 series was one of the world’s first ‘true’ high speed trains, built to run on Japan’s newly built Tokaido high-speed line in the 1960s. As time went on, they also ran on other lines such as the San’yo Shinkansen and the Hakata line, in a variety of formations - with trains comprising anything from 4 to 16 coaches in length. The trains featured a distinctive front end which, in combination with their high speed, earned them the “Bullet Train” moniker. Following retirement from regular service, JR ran a number of commemorative ‘Hikari’ tours in 2008, marking the end of 44 years in service for the class. Many vehicles are preserved, including a driving car at the UK’s National Railway Museum.
