Product Description

On April 24, 1932, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad introduced its finest passenger train, The George Washington, to operate between Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati, Ohio. Elegance in the Colonial style was the theme, and it was carried out in grand style throughout the train. The George Washington also had the distinction of being the first all "air-cooled" train in the world, a passenger could walk the entire length of the train, from first coach to coach in air-conditioned comfort.
Passenger trains of this era were moving hotels. Guests would board in the evening, have a good dinner and perhaps read or chat with fellow passengers, and then retire to their beds. In the morning, the porter would wake guests in time for a complete breakfast in the diner. While passengers dined, the porter would prepare their bags for departure. The train would glide into the station leaving guests well fed and rested, ready to begin a new day at their destination.
George Washington locos were decorated much more elegantly than other locomotives on the C&O system and were kept spotless. Polish-steel covers adorned the air pumps on the front of the loco, as well as the cylinder heads, running board edges, and other appliances. A silver and black cameo of George Washington was prominently affixed on the front of the boiler. A large letterboard hung from the high walkway along the side of the tender, proudly displaying The George Washington name in large gold-leaf lettering. This train pack contains:
