The D9 was first unveiled in 1958. It was built by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd (Midland Red). Production spanned 1960-66, byw hich time 345 buses had been built. By the mid-1970s Midland Red had withdrawn large numbers of D9s. Obselete Fleet London purchased a small number, of which seven where converted to open-toppers. These were then hired to London Transport for sightseeing duties and continued to operate well into the 1980's. During 1978, OM7 (917 KHA) was detailed to run a new service, the 74Z, which ran between Baker Street and London Zoo.
