The City of Edinurgh has long been served by open top sighteeing buses operated by Lothian Buses and its predecessors. In the Past, Leyland Atlanteans and , more recently, Olympians, which were coming to the end of their working lives, had their roofs removed and were kitted out for sightseeing work. This trend was dramatically altered in 1999 when four Dennis Tridents with Permanent open top Plaxton President bodywork were purchased for use on Lothian's open top tours. These buses were the first permanent open top double-deckers built for a British operator for 60 years. In 2000 Lothian's open top tour adopted a new, bright and colourful City sightseeing branding and the buses were repaintd into their current livery. A digitally recorded commentary is provided with a choice of seven languages for the tour which takes in many of Edinburgh's historic sites of interest as well as more modern attractions such as the new Scottish Parliament and Dynamic Earth. Lothian Buses also owns two other Edinburgh open top tour operators Mac Tours, with its fleet of 20 Routmasters, and The Edinburgh Tour (Guide Friday) with its 10 open top Olympians.
