AEC 6441T trolleybus in wartime grey "Cardiff Corporation"
Cardiff inaugrated its trolleybus service on March 1st 1942, appropriately St Davids day. Designed to eliminate the trams, the trolleybus would become Cardiff's electric traction until January 1970. Vehicle 204 was registered in March 1942 and carried wartime grey livery on delivery. Finished in post-war condition without the white blackout markings, our model carries the window posters for cardiff's PAYE (pay as you enter) system for a flat one penny fare for any distance travelled. operating for almost a decade, it gave Cardiff the lowest fares in the country and to add to the simplicity of the system, no tickets were issued, a conductor being carried to supervise payment and control the platform. on the 12th November 1950, the system was replaced with Bell Punch 'Ultimate' ticket machines. 204 was withdrawn in June 1965 and scrapped by bird's.
