209 squadron were reformed at Mount Batten on 15 March 1930 as a flying boat unit equipped with the only four Iris aircraft built. Stranraers arrived in December 1938 and in September 1939, the squadron moved to Invergordon to cover the North Sea. It moved again in October, to Oban, where in December it began to re-equip with the Saro Lerwick, however, this aircraft proved to be something of a failure and in April 1941 they were replaced by Catalinas. In March 1941, it moved to Lough Erne and then to Iceland in August before returning to the UK at Pembroke Dock.
