Scammell Lorries Ltd, of Watford was set up in 1922 and was an offshoot of G. Scammell & Nephew Ltd., the coach building and steam wagon company whose history dates back to 1837. Shortly after setting up, the Company took on a young engineer, Oliver D. North who was responsible for a number of important designs. Until 1933 the Company was devoted to heavy duty trucks but then launched its famous Mechanical Horse followed by the GÇÿRigid 8GÇÖ which went into production in 1937. After the war they produced the Showtrac for the fairground industry, followed by the Explorer, the Mountaineer and the Constructor and the Highwayman appeared in the mid 50s. In 1955 the Company was absorbed into the Leyland Group and in 1962 produced the Routeman II with its striking fibreglass Michelotti designed cab. 1964 saw the launch of the Contractor and the Crusader appeared in 1968. Following the acquisition of Leyland by DAF Trucks in 1987, the plant closed in 1988.
