Metrobus began life in 1983 with a fleet of six vehicles operating from the Green Street Depot in Orpington on bus routes in the Orpington and Croydon areas along with coach excursions and private charter. In the mid to late 80's Metrobus was awarded a series of London Regional Transport contracts. A new Gravesend network of routes was introduced in 1988 with eight Mercedes mini buses - this was sold in 1989 to Kentish Bus. The Company expanded further in the 90's with a host of commercial routes in the Bromley and Beckenham areas and increased its contract base with London Transport tenders following the closure of the Kentish Bus operation in South East London. In 1997 East Surrey Bus Services was perchased from Metrobus East Surrey and the establishing of a Depot in South Godstone. Metrobus South Coast was formed to take over former leisure links contracts and some former Brighton & Hove/Brighton Blue Bus Routes with a depot at Lewes. Metrobus was aquired by the Go-Ahead group in 1999. The Company quickly expanded to run the 'Gatwick Direct' contract and opened a fourth depot at Crawley to operate the new town network in 2001. Despite the closure of the Lewes Depot, 2003 saw the largest expansion following further Transport for London contract wins and the implementation of the Crawley-Gatwick Fastway guided bus project. The Company now runs a fleet of over 330 vehicles comprising Tridents, Darts, Scanias and Olympians.
