Andrew Barclay 14" and 16" 0-4-0ST
The Andrew Barclay 14" and 16" 0-4-0ST is a group of steam locomotives introduced and operated by various industrial companies between the late 1890s and early 1950s. Over 1000 of this and similar designs were made for shunting and trip working on private lines and around 100 survive today.
Design and features
The 14" and 16" 0-4-0ST was a standardised saddle tank locomotive design from the late Victorian era and built by Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock, Scotland. They had a small set of variations available to potential buyers such as alternative cabs, tanks and cylinder sizes. They were supplied to a wide range of industries including collieries, dockyards, steelworks, and factories. This meant they received an extensive list of different liveries throughout their operating lives.
Further use
Some locomotives were used by larger railway companies such as the Great Western Railway, and British Railways kept an Andrew Barclay in service until 1958, carrying the BR black livery. The design was also bought by international operators, being used in Australia and elsewhere in the world.
Later life and preservation
The locomotives outlived steam operation on British Rail, remaining in industrial service until the early 1980s. This meant that many Andrew Barclays were sold into preservation and almost one hundred can be seen across the UK on light passenger duties or demonstration freight workings. Some have also been painted into colourschemes not carried by the class before including Caledonian Railway blue.
