Despite being successful, the GWR ‘Hall’ and ‘Grange’ classes were not able to cover the full range of duties previously undertaken by the 43xx class. The GWR decided to produce a lighter locomotive in the form of the ‘Manor’ class. They were much lighter and had a wider route availability. 20 were produced by GWR utilising 43xx ‘Mogul’ parts, with BR producing 10 more. The class saw use on mixed traffic workings across South Wales and the West Country.
