Developed from the earlier Class 59, a total of 455 Class 66s were built by Electro-Motive Diesel between 1998 and 2015 - making the class one of the most prevalent freight locomotives on the UK network. The first batch was ordered by EWS to replace a number of ageing locomotives they had inherited such as the Class 47. Nicknamed "Sheds" by rail enthusiasts, the locomotives have proved to be powerful and very reliable, helping the UK rail freight industry to remain competitive.
