Prototype Information

Construction of the Mk2 coaching stock began in 1963, with the first prototype. The new class aimed to improve over the Mk1 stock, with a better body structure, pressure ventilation, improved lighting and a higher top speed capability. The coaches were gradually improved over the following decade, culminating in the Mk2Fs, which were built between 1973 and 75. These variants featured plastic interior panelling, improved seating, full air-conditioning and more.
