A total of 58 Class 22 (or "Baby Warship") locomotives were built between 1959 and 1962 by the North British Locomotive Co. for British Railways. They earned their nickname due to having a similar appearance to the much larger Class 41 'Warships', of which they also shared the same internal equipment. The class mainly operated in the West of England working a wide variety of local passenger services and freight work. One member of the class was to be preserved, D6319, but it was accidentally scrapped before the new owner could retrieve it.
