Charles Collett designed the GWR 2251 class to replace the ageing fleet of Dean Goods 0-6-0s. The class were essentially a modernised version of the their predecessors, sharing the same dimensions but featuring a tapered boiler and a full cab. The class increased both boiler pressure and heating surface, which provided a useful increase of power. The class saw prolific use across the GWR network and survived late into the BR steam era.
