Heljan are producing a OO gauge model of the Class 25/3. A total of ten variations will be available, including the first ever "ready-to-haul" (unpowered) ETHEL train heating units. The new model will feature a high-performance chassis with all-wheel drive and pick-ups as well as illuminated headcode panels and marker lights. Heljan is representing the final development of the Derby/ Sulzer Type 2, covering 25/3s built between Dec 1963 and April 1967 as well as the 'ETHEL' train-heating units that were converted from the locomotives as a short-term solution in the 1980s.
Each model will feature:

Heljan gave us an exclusive first look at the latest engineering samples for their Class 25/3. These prototypes showcase new bodyside grilles which have been updated over the previous sample as well as the differing exhaust ports featured. They are early samples and there are still some revisions to be made. Release is planned for early 2020.

The /3 variation denoted the final batch of Class 25s that were constructed by BR's Derby Works in the mid-1960s. The Class 25s were developed from the Class 24 and were provided with more power to enable them to hit 90mph. Although primarily designed for freight work, some were fitted with boilers for heating passenger trains and could be seen across most of the network on a variety of services. Three 25/3 locos were converted for use as mobile generators for train heating in cases where the hauling locomotive could not provide it. Named ETHEL units (Electric Train Heating Ex-Locomotives), they were used from 1983 but were all scrapped by 1994.
