Hornby's highly anticipated new model of the Class 87 in OO gauge is due within the next few months! The newly tooled locomotive features: a 5-pole skew wound motor; separately fitted details such as handrails, rood, and body features; Digital and Digital sound capability, and NEM couplings. The locomotive will be available in three distinctive liveries, covering the lifespan of these stalwarts of the west coast - BR blue, Intercity swallow and Virgin Trains.
The Class 87s were the flagship locomotives of the West Coast Main Line from their introduction in the mid-70s, until the late 80s when the Class 90s began serving on the line. Upon privatisation, the fleet was handed over to Virgin Trains, who operated the locomotives until the new Class 390 'Pendolinos' were introduced. Now, just a single locomotive is still in use in the UK - 87002 is used to shunt Caledonian Sleeper stock at London Euston and is occasionally used as a back-up for the service or for charter trains. Two locomotives are preserved, one at the NRM and another at Crewe Heritage Centre. The rest have either been scrapped or exported to Bulgaria.
