Rail Head Treatment Train
In 2003, Network Rail ordered 50 FEA-F container wagons to replace a small and increasingly unreliable fleet of Rail Head Treatment Trains (RHTT). They designed three types of module to be used during Autumn when leaf fall can cause trains to slip on the rails.
They use a mixture of water jets and a paste called 'Sandite' (a mixture of sand, aluminium and a unique adhesive) to clear the rails and to aid adhesion. The three modules are; Water tanks, Sandite applicators and Pump platforms. Even though these are only seen for a few months a year, they remain one of the most photographed types of train in the UK.
We are producing four two-wagon versions of the RHTT, with two extension packs available to enlarge your train to three wagons, you can explore the different options below.

Product Development Updates
First EP Received
We have now received the first EP for the RHTT, featuring one wagon chassis along with one of each module used to create the finished wagons.
The wagon itself has a good amount of weight owing to the diecast chassis which also has a lot of separately fitted detailing applied to it. This is also true of the modules themselves where we have etched metal handrails, grills and an array of finely moulded details. This EP will be used to ensure that details are correctly placed on the wagons as well as testing the running qualities, coupling and ease of use in regards to adding and removing modules.
3D Print Received
We have previously shown off images from the CAD files which we have used to create a 3D print of the base FEA-F wagon and 3 modules that the RHTT comprises. This print is used to check major dimensions and shapes. It allows us to approve the CAD and move on to cutting metal for the Tooling stage. We're happy with the detail that has been captured and we'll make sure that everything is correct before continuing to the next stage.

We have now received the CADs for the RHTT's and they are shown below. They show the FEA-F wagons as well as the modules which sit on them and deliver the sandite and water to the rails. There are a couple of tweaks to them but overall they are very good. Click on the images for a bigger version and let us know what you think.

Recently, we visited Colas Rail Freight's operating base in Shrewsbury to take a closer look at some Rail Head Treatment Trains and research the wagons and operations of the train further. Whilst there, we were able to get some great photographs of an RHTT and some of Colas Rail's fleet. Check out some of the shots below.

Today we have announced our Rail Head Treatment Train project. Available in pristine and weathered variations, these are due to be delivered by November 2018.
