As used on the Southern and LMR - condition is post-modifications at Brighton Works in 1953/54 with a second row of ventilation grilles along the bonnet doors.
In this condition it was also (briefly) tested on the Eastern Region (LT&S Section) and worked trials on the East Coast Main Line. In this guise it worked on the Central Section of the SR (Brighton lines) and did a lot of work on cross-country passenger trains from Birmingham and Rugby to Peterborough/Norwich.
