Product Description

Chiltern Railways was the first private train operating company to place orders for the new trains bringing to an end the 1064-day privatisation train 'Famine' with modern, air-conditioned rolling stock. They also have the distinction of being the first uders of the 'Turbostar' Multiple units. The initial order to Ardtranz, Derby in the late 90's was for 12 cars of the class designated Class 168/0. Subsequent batches had a differeing sub-class designation making them Class 168/1. This build was basically the same as a three-car Class 170 'Turbostar' in external appearance, but is equipped with different couplers, and shoegear beams to hold London Underground tripcock devices for the working over the Metropolitan lines between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham. They are of identical construction, namely, welded aluminium underframes, sides/roofs and steel ends bolted together. In all, 55 Class 168/0 and Class 168/1 cars are currently in service or on order with Chiltern railways in two, three and four car formations. All are in use on fast 'Clubman' services between London Marlebone, Warwick Parkway, Birmingham Snow Hill and Kidderminster. This model has directional lighting.
