Blackpool's Ballon trams are synonymous with its famous promenade but a little known fact is that in the second war period, two double deck trams were required to work school specials on the inland marton tram route. Two balloons were despatched from Rigby Road to Marton Depot to replace ageing standard double deckers and cars 251 and 252 were chosen for the task. they were fitted with swivel head trolleys in order to cope with the demands of the famous trolley reserver at Royal Oak and between school times, on busy days could be seen working on any part of the route. They rarely strayed onto the promenade at that time. 252 was fitted with single end destination displays and is our model depicted here. 251 was the last tram to leave Marton depot when it closed in March 1963.
