MGB 50th Anniversary Set (The first & the last)

MGB production commenced on 28th May 196 and it launched on 20th September. The first 500 examples were destined for its primary market, the USA. However, the first car, chassis 101, was kept for press and publicity work. Finished in Iris Blue it had wire wheels and a heater which added £34.37 and £16.85 respectively to its launch price of £950. MG’s open two-seater monocoque design was torsionally stiff and ahead of its time. It was safe, fun to drive and comfortable, while simple robust components made it practical, reliable and, importantly, profitable to build. Although motorsport success in the Le Mans 24 Hours, Monte Carlo Rally and Marathon de la Route undoubtedly boosted its image, stylist Don Hayter designed a shape of such timeless elegance and beauty that it continued to outsell the TR7, its replacement, into the late seventies. The last of the 512,243 MGBs manufactured came off the line on the 22nd October 1980, ten years later than initially envisaged. Modelled here, it was one of the 1000 ‘run-out’ LE models which retailed for £6,108 and marked the end of MG production at Abingdon. However, the MGB refused to die. Bodyshell production restarted in 1988 and a worldwide industry has built up dedicated to its preservation. Always far greater than the sum of its parts the MGB is the definitive classic car. When BMC launched the Mini in 1959 it made all other small cars obsolete at a stroke. However, like many revolutions in design, it did not sell well initially despite being heaped with praise by the contemporary press. In a rationalisation process that also incorporated baulk-ring synchromesh, Austin announced the ‘Super de Luxe’ in October 1962 and listed the model for £67 less than the previous ‘Super’. Fitted with a fresh air heater, overriders, carpets, single tone vinyl seats, chrome grille and a one piece boot mat the ‘Super de Luxe’ trod that fine line between what the public desired and Issigonis’ original utilitarian vision of a grown up economy car. Introduced in 1980 the Audi quattro was originally envisaged as a low volume motorsports homologation special. However, worldwide demand for a car that became a legend during its own production life was such that Audi continued to develop the car through the 1980s. They added ABS brakes in late 1983 and progressively more powerful engines until the quattro finally ceased production on 1st March 1991 after 11,452 examples had been built. The car modelled here in stunning, and expensive, Pearl Effect white (paint-code ‘OA9’) benefited from Audi’s September 1984 onwards restyle which incorporated a sloping grille and headlamps, a colour coded boot-spoiler, black tinted rear lights and 8Jx15 Ronal alloy wheels. Vauxhall’s third generation Cavalier was launched in August 1988 and marked an increase in GM Europe’s ambitions for their fleet model car. From the start there were twenty-two variants available and more followed, although no estate was ever offered. The SRi, modelled here, offered brisk performance and precise handling without being too stiff for mass market tastes. At £11,499 it was a very appealing package to fleet buyers as the 8-valve engine was a well-known and reliable unit which, in the Mk3, gave economical motorway performance thanks to the car’s impressive Cd of 0.29. The front-wheel-drive Cavalier consistently beat the more advanced looking but conservatively engineered Sierra in magazine tests. The ultimate incarnation of GM’s ‘teardrop’ Mk2 Astra was the 1988 16 valve GTE, modelled here. It was a fiercely fast hot-hatch, loud and raw, whilst VW’s rival Golf GTI 16v was polished and sophisticated. The GTE appealed to buyers who liked their steak rare and their dashboard digital. The 2-litre ‘Family 2’ engine was fitted with a Cosworth developed 16 valve twin-cam cylinder-head to become the ‘KBA’, or ‘red-top’, and meant this lightweight (1006kg) had blistering real-world pace, especially above 4000rpm, that eclipsed its on paper figures. Severe torque steer and brakes that could barely match the performance just added to the fun of the hottest of the hot-hatches.
