Class 04 Shunter D2264 in BR Green with Late Crest - Pre-owned - rails snapped on both sides - front coupling removed (included) Product Image 1 Product Image 2 Product Image 3

OO Gauge (1:76 Scale)

31-342-SD

Class 04 Shunter D2264 in BR Green with Late Crest - Pre-owned - rails snapped on both sides - front coupling removed (included)

1 in stock.

The forerunner of the BR Class 04 diesel-mechanical shunter originated in 1947, when the Drewry Car Co. supplied a single 0-6-0 locomotive, painted apple green, to the LNER for shunting trials.
The evaluation was carried out at Gorton, and then in east Anglia - the prototype, rejected by the LNER, was purchased by BR(SR) for departmental use at Hither Green depot.
In 1952, as a result of R.A. Riddles' policy of favouring diesel power for shunting locomotives, the first ordrers were placed with the Drewry Car Co. and Vulcan Foundry to meet the need for small but versatile locomotives, able to operate on light lines such as tramways, docks and private sidings, where the bigger 350 h.p. diesel-electrics were prohibited.
the various batches built incorporated detail differences, the most noticeable being on the first four, (11100 - 11103), for use on the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway, which had side-valances and cowcatchers fitted.

The Class 08, or Class DEJ4 as it was originally designated, owes its genesis to the early experiments carried out by the LMS for diesel-powered shunting engines as early as 1932. By 1945, a standard design of 0-6-0 shunter had been developed, and British Railways adopted this as the mainstay of its shunting fleet albeit afetr implementing further alterations to conform to their standard 'L1' loading guage, thus allowing for great operating versatility in all regions. Construction of the locomotives took place between 1953 and 1968, and the Class 08, as it became designated after October 1968 in the TOPS classification, eventually totalled 894 units. The LMS favoured the use of an English Electric Co diesel power unit and associated electrical equipment in the shunter, where as both the GWR and the LNER had experimented with Brush engines in their development. This did not find favour with BR, although some locomotives appeared with Crossley engines and others with Lister-Blackstone, later to become Class 10 in the TOPS system. It is only the EE Co powered versions that are in service today, powered by English Electric's 6KT six-cylinder engine, with twin type 506 traction motors of same manufacture and fitted with vacum, air or dual brakes.

Class 24 Derby 5087 in BR Blue - Pre-owned - decals removed, one full panel of glazing and fan assembly missing - imperfect box

Originally designated Type 2, later to become Class 24 in the TOPS system, a total of 151 of these diesel-electric locomotives were built powered by the 6LDA28-A Sulzer engine, giving an output of 1160bhp. The majority was built at BR Derby, although some were constructed at Crewe and Darlington. In addition, Beyer Peacock, Gorton, who was privately contracted, built a further batch. The consultant designers for the Type 2 were Wilkes & Ashmore, with the first of the class, D5000, being completed at Derby in July 1958. This was subsequently put on display that month at Marylebone Station, London - this locomotive was alomost selected for the National Railway Museum, York but was ultimately scrapped. Although intended for use on the London Midland region, on their introduction they went to the Southern Region to deputize for Type 3 'Crompton' diesels that were late in delivery. By the time the entire Type 2 fleet was in traffic, they could be found operating on all regions with the exception of the Western. With a life span of 28 years these small, yet versatile, locomotives gave excellent service in all manner of roles in branch and main line duties either singly or working in multiple. The Class 24's began to be phased out of BR capital stock in the late 1960's, with the final locomotive being withdrawn in 1981. Several locomotives were retained after this for carriage pre-heating duties.

The Bachmann Deltic models do not have any lights fitted.

British Railways Board's mid-1950's modernisation plan called for a change to alternative forms of traction. With experience gained from prototype diesels that ran on the LMR and SR manufacturers were encouraged develop new locomotives. The English Electric Company decided to build a demonstrator locomotive, which entered trials in 1955 on the LMR. The design incorporated two diesel engines that generated 3,300 BHP based on 1947 designs for the Admiralty intended for use in Royal Navy ships. It was given the name 'Deltic' because of the type of diesel engines fitted and ran in a very distinctive blue striped livery
The prototype was very successful and the ER Board decided to order twenty-two production diesels that would replace fifty-five top link Pacific steam locomotives. The LMR never ordered any because of the decision to move to electric traction. Another prototype, designated DP1, worked on the LMR region with London-Liverpool trains, before moving onto the Settle & Carlisle line and finally the ER working out of King's Cross, London.
The production Deltics entered service in 1962. Weighing 100 tons, capable of 105mph and with a tractive effort of 50,000 lbs they were based in London, Gateshead and Edinburgh. The first livery was BR two tone green initially without names but within twelve months all carried regimental or famous race horse names. The livery then changed to BR corporate blue livery. The locomotives had their own very distinctive sound combined with a noticeable light blue exhaust plume when moving off with a full load.
The twenty-two Deltics worked the ECML route until 1978 when they were replaced by modern HST sets. They were relegated to secondary routes until eventually, in 1982, they were withdrawn from service. At this point each locomotive had clocked an average of 2.5 million miles each after twenty years in service under BR.

After the privatisation of Britain's railways in the mid 1990's new operators quickly identified that the ageing fleet of BR locomotives needied replacing. Brush Engineering identified a low cost solution by re-engineering surplus Class 47 locomotives fitted with new GM power units that would provide another 15 to 20 years working life. In 1997 Freightliner decided to order converted Class 47's to help with their growing business. Classified 57/0 they were fitted with a GM 645-12E3 2500 bhp power unit; a new exhaust panel, a top speed of 75 mph and improved cab ends. 12 neamed locomotives have been built and finished in the company's green/yellow livery.
Brysh Engineering then developed a passenger demonstrator locomotive, a type 57/6 for the leasing company Poerterbrook which carried a very distinctive silver and purple livery. In 2004 the locomotive was sold to the West Coast railway Co and is now painted in plain maroon livery with black stripe.
In 2002 Virgin trains ordered 12 diesels classified as 57/3 with a revised power unit delivering 2750 bhp enabling a top speed of 95mph. they were painted in the companied distinctive livery of red, white and silver and as their primary fuction was to act as emergency rescue locomotives they were named after the characters in the 1960's TV series Thunderbirds. The order was increased to a total of 16 and now all the locomotives have been modified with automatic Delner coupling devices, fitted to speed up rescue operations. At the weekends the locomotives can be seen hauling passenger trains.
In 2003 First Great Western took delivery of four 57/6 locomotives all named after castles to work the paddington to Plymouth route hauling passenger Mk II and III rolling stock.

1 in stock.

Gresley designed the first of this countrys 3-cylinder 2-6-2's for the London and North eastern Railway. the first engine appeared in 1936 and was named 'Green Arrow' to co-incide with the inroduction of a special fast freight service of the same name. The three cylinders, steam chests and smokebox saddle were made in one casting, with the short outside steam pipes. Gresley's conjugated valve gear placed ahead of the cylindres, was used to drive the middle valve.
As engines of the Class were due for cylinder renewals, it was found to be much more economical to eliminate the large single casting, so seperate castings were bolted to the centre casting, with the longer and more direct outside steam pipes forming part of the modification.
as part of a further series of draughting investigations carried out at Swindon, 60963 was the first of only eight engines from the Class to be fitted with a double blast pipe and chimney.
Seven other engines received names, which appeared on curved nameplates above the centre wheels, where as 'Green Arrow' ran in service with straight nameplates on either side of the smokebox.
V2 locomotives built up to 1941 carried the LNER lined green livery, with construction during World War II seeing the plain black. After nationalisation, the lined blavk livery was adopted up until December 1956, when BR Brunswick green was introduced. 'Green Arrow' is depicted here as it is in its current state in the National Railway Museum in York. It has just finished running and will need large sums of money to restore it if its to ever run again.

H.N. Gresley designed the first of this country's 3-Cylinder 2-6-2's for the London and North Eastern Railway. The first engine appeared in 1936 and was named 'Green Arrow' to coinside with the introduction of a special fast freight service of the same name. The three Cylinders, Steam Chests and Smokebox saddle were made in one casting with short outside Steam Pipes. Gresley's conjugated valve gear placed ahead of the cylinders, was used to drive the middle valve. As the engines of the Class V2 became due for Cylinder renewals it was found much more economical to do away with the large casting for ythe three cylinders, Steam chests, and Smoke Box saddle. Instead, seperate castings were made for the outside cylinders and Steam chests whwich were then bolted on to the Centre Casting. Longer and more direct outside Steam pipes formed part of the modification. As part of a furtherseries of draughting investigations carried out at Swindon B.R. No 60963 was fitted with double blast pipe and chimney. Of the Class of 184 engines only eight ever received the double blast arrangement. Seven other engines received names but on curved name plates above the centre wheels - Not as 'Green Arrow' ran in service with straight name plates on the sides of the smoke nox. V2's built up to 1941 had the L.N.E.R. Green Lined Livery. The Wartime livery was unlined black. After nationalisation the lined black livery was adopted up to December 1956, when B.R. Brunswick Green was used for the V2's.

The 5600 Class 0-6-2 tank engines were designed by C B Collett, and were introduced in 1924. The class was originally designed to work in South Wales, to replace elderly locomotives ?inherited? at the Grouping, which took place in 1923, and were now worn out. Their design followed Great Western Railway practice, in that standard parts were used as far as possible.
Included in Collett?s innovations were a standard boiler that was suitable for the 5600 and the locomotives that preceded it, complete with traditional copper-capped chimney and safety valves ?bonnet?. The 5600 class engines had the distinction of being the only locomotive of 0-6-2 wheel arrangement on the GWR.
They were a tank engine of substantial size, weighing 62tons 18cwt, and were 37ft 6ins long while the side tanks could hold 1900 gallons of water. One hundred of the class were built. Owing to pressure of work at the GWR workshops at Swindon, a number were built by outside contractors resulting in minor differences. In 1927 another hundred similar tanks were constructed, this was designated the 6600 Class, and was slightly heavier.
All the locomotives that made up the two classes passed into nationalisation, and remained in service until 1960, at which time they were withdrawn from service quite rapidly.

Class 45xx 2-6-2 Prairie tank 4573 in BR black with early emblem (weathered) - Pre-owned - Detail at back has been reattached - Imperfect box

1 in stock.

The 45xx Class was a development of Churchward's earlier 44xx Class 2-6-2 tank locomotives.
Almost identical to the original 44xx Class, the only major differences of note to the 45xx were the larger diameter (4'-71/2") driving wheels and the profile in the running plate which was changed to a curved drop end from No.4534 onwards. The increased wheel diameter made the 45xx 2-6-2 generally a more useful engine due to the subsequent increase in speed. They were employed mainly on branchline duties on both passenger and freight trains.
Built originally at Stafford Road Works, Wolverhampton between 1906 and 1908, the first batch of 45xx locomotives were numbered 2161-80 (later 4500-4519). These engines were distinctive in having copper capped chimneys and cast numberplates on their tanks' sides, which were flat topped. The second batch was constructed at Swindon from 1909, nos' 2181-90. In 1912 renumbering took place in the series 4500-4574.
In all, five batches of the Class 45xx were built at Swindon until construction ceased during 1924. The Class was superseded by the Class 4575 three years later. Withdrawals occured as early as 1950, due to the age of the earliest built 45xx's. Currently there are four examples preserved (4555, 4561, 4566 and 4588).

June 6, 1944 witnessed the Allied invasion of Occupied Europe - code named Operation Overlord, this major event in World War II history, placed a great strain on the Railway Companies. The logistics of this massive military operation called for the shipping of steam locomotives to Europe, for use on munitions and troop trains, to replace continental engines devastated by bombardment or sabotage.

As a chronic shortage of suitable locomotives existed, R A Riddles, then Director of Transportation at the Ministry of Supply, had the foresight to realise that vast numbers of purpose-built heavy freight locomotives would have to be designed and constructed quickly. The criteria would be the speed and simplicity of the locomotives' engineering build, with emphasis being placed on ease of production.

Stanier's Class 8F 2-8-0 was already in War Department service, but considerable manpower was needed to build each one, plus 16 tons of forgings and 17 tons of steel castings at a time when such raw material was desperately needed in armaments for the proposed invasion. A 'value engineering' analysis was undertaken for a new heavy locomotive specification based on the 8F, and the first WD 2-8-0 had to be capable of handling 1000 ton trains at 40mph! The simplicity of its construction reduced the labour content by around 20%.

In total, 935 were built, their reliability despite inferior maintenance conditions, use of poor grade fuel, ability to withstand general abuse and low speed capability were the criteria for a locomotive operating in a war zone. On the minus side, their rough riding qualities made them unpopular with the crews. They earned themselves the nickname "Bed Irons" as the result of loud clanking noises emitted from their motion, a sound that train-spotters of the day still recall. Despite their original purpose, a considerable number of 2-8-0's never saw wartime service, and the LNER absorbed many, which became designated Class 07.

The Class K3 'Mogul' was primarily a development from the earlier acheivements by (later Sir) Nigel gresely on the GNR. His predecessor, Henry Ivatt, had already im[plemented the GNR's letter 'H' classifictaion system for the 20 engines derscribed as Class H I purchased from the Baldwin Company, USA. The letter 'H' indicated a 2-6-0 locomotive. Gresley's pioneer class of 1912 was in essence an Ivatt 0-6-0 with pony truck and outside cylinders; this received the designation Class H2. A few years later a development of this class with a larger boiler became Class H3. All were two cylinder locomotives.
Subsequently, 1920 saw the introduction of a version with even larger boiler and three cylinders described as Class H3. After the grouping they became reclassified K1, K2 and K3 by the LNER in order of their introduction. Altogether, 183 Class K3 locomotives were constructed between 1924 and 1937 at a variety of workshops in compliance with LNER standards in addition to the ten GNR version outshopped in 1920.
The emergence of Gresely's Class V2 2-6-2 locomotives in 1936 saw the end of K3 construction. The 193 examples ok K3 in traffic were used all over the former LNER system. The first was withdrawn in February 1958, and by december 1962 all were gone. Not one example survived into preservation.

Introduced originally in 1951, the Class 4 2-6-4T's were the most numerous of all Standard tank locomotives, a total of 155 being constructed over a six year period. Out of the total number, 130 were built at Brighton works with the remainder coming from Derby and Doncaster. Numbered in the 80000 series, the British Railways Standard design owes its ancestry to the basically similar locomotives developed for the LMS by Stanier and Fairburn between 1935 and 1948. Although calssified 'mixed traffic' by BR, the engines were more suited to their role as a passenger tank for use on long distance suburban trains, although they could easily handle short distance freight workings. They proved themselves to be fast, reliable machines and became popular with their crews. Although the first locomotive was withdrawn as early as 1962, general scrapping did not commence until 1964, with some examples on BR (SR) lasting until the end of steam power late in 1967.

The new Standard 5 Loco's are being delivered with a plastic box like accessory. This black box is only used when the Loco is being fitted for DCC operation. It acts as an insulator between the digital chip and the Loco chassis.

Built under the direction of R A Riddles, the first of the British Railways Standard Class 5's, numbered 73000, appeared from Derby works on its completion in April 1951. It was to immediately take its place on display in the British Transport Commission Exhibition held in Marleybone Station, London in black lined out mixed traffic livery.

The design of the 5MT was based closely on the LMS Stanier locomotive of the same power classification, and incorporated the same tried and tested boiler with the exception of BR fittings being used. A total of 172 engines were built between 1951 and 1957, the Class being perhaps the mostly widely distributed of all Standard classes, being allocated to every region of the BR network. Several varieties of tenders were linked to the Class 5's to meet the varied needs of each region. Other minor design changes are also noticeable in service, such as the relocation of the chime whistle from behind the chimney to the top of the firebox, and fluted coupling rods being discontinued. The most significant engineering innovation was the use of the Caprotti valves and gear on thirty engines, which proved to be mechanically more efficient than piston valves.

These were the last locomotives designed and built by the LMS and the unconventional design was influenced by the successful use of American S160 locomotives during the 2nd World War. Designed for ease of maintenance rather than aesthetics, they were constructed with a high mounted boiler and running plate for quick access to pipe work and auxiliary fittings with the result that they soon earned the nickname 'Mucky Ducky'. A total of 162 were built from 1947 to 1952 and worked across the LMR, ER and Scottish areas. the first 50 were built witha double chimney, which caused exhaust problems. The remainder of the batch were improved by fitting a single chimney and by 1952 the first fifty were all modified and fitted with the same chimney. With a cut down tender and enclosed cab the locomotives could be easily driven tender first making them suitable for routes with no turntables. They proved to be a very powerful and reliable locomotive well suited to mixed traffic work. BR started to withdraw these locomotives in 1963 but the last of these moguls survived until the end of steam in 1968. Sadly on No 43106 survived into preservation.

32-875-SAS

Class 4MT Fairburn 2-6-4 tank 42677 in LMS livery - Pre-owned - weathered - Sold as Seen - Non-Runner

1 in stock.

Charles Fairburn was the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway for just a short period before he passed away in 1945 at the age of 58.
Locomotive building during the war was restricted but Fairburn used the time to evaluate the 2-6-4 Tank locomotives designed by his predecessor, Sir William Stanier by reducing the coupled wheelbase and the overall weight to give greater route availability.
Construction began at Derby in 1945 and by the time building ceased in 1951, 277 locomotives had been built, 41 of them at Brighton for use on the non-electrified lines of British Railways Southern Region.
The Fairburn tanks were spread far and wide with examples working on suburban services around London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester.
The introduction of diesel multiple units and the widespread closure of lines saw the first withdrawals in 1961 and the last in 1967, the penultimate year of steam operation on British Railways main lines.
Two examples (42073 / 42085) were saved for preservation on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Cumbria where they still operate.
