| 4000 | Hawker Siddeley Brush "Kestrel" prototype diesel electric loco 'KESTREL' was a private venture by Brush, a division of Hawker Siddeley, and upon completion in 1967 was the worlds most powerful Sulzer loco @ 4000hp. By mid 1969 its bogies were exchanged for Class 47 examples and the weight reduction this gave enabled the loco to undertake passenger duties between Kings Cross & Newcastle. 'KESTREL' was withdrawn from service and shipped to Russia to attend an exhibition in July 1971. She was never to return, ending her days as a test bed, eventually being scrapped in the early 1990's. | 1500 | Class 15 diesel electric BTH/Clayton D8200 in BR plain green livery, as delivered into service. A Brief History of Class 15 Locomotives: During the implementation of Modernisation Plan of British Railways in 1955, a contract was placed to British-Thompson-Houston (BTH) for 10 Pilot Scheme locomotives for light local freight and Empty Coaching Stock duties in East Anglia. The 10 Pilot Scheme Locomotives were delivered to the British Transport Commission (BTC) in 1957, commencing in October. The balance of the order up to D8209 was delivered before the end of 1958. Following this an order for a further 34 locomotives was placed. These locomotives were delivered between 1959 and 1961. When built the fleet was envisaged to operate in the on the Eastern Region in the Anglia area but ended up mostly in the East London area. The locomotives were delivered painted all over British Railways "Brunswick Green". Small Yellow warning panels were added from 1963 onwards, with full yellow ends eventually being applied to all except to D8230 and D8232. With the decline of London freight duties in the late 1960s the fleet of 44 locomotives found themselves redundant and withdrawals took place from 1969 to 1971, with the last members of the class been withdrawn from traffic on 27th March 1971. However four of the Class, D8203/33/37 and D8243, escaped scrapping and were taken for carriage heating duties. D8233 and the other two locomotives were regarded as surplus to requirements, D8233 was transferred to HeHealy Mills depot for storage alongside other redundant locomotives, from here it was purchased for preservation In 1984. | 1503 | Class 15 D8233 in BR Green with small yellow panels as preserved. Limited edition of 1000 D8233 is the sole surviving Class 15 of a once 44 strong class of type 1 Diesel locomotives. D8233 was saved from the cutters torch in 1984 and has had spells at the East Lancashire Railway, Mangapps Farm and Crewe Heritage Center before returning to the East Lancashire Railway. In February 2006 D8233 moved back to the East Lancashire Railway for the continuation of its restoration, from then and into 2007 the society has concentrated on stripping the cooler group and no.1 end nose compartments for internal renovation and the associated parts to be overhauled ready for refitting - a process that begun in 2007 and is is now complete. August 2006 saw a real boost for the project in the shape of a replacement Paxman 16YHXL power unit purchased for D8233, its own would have been very costly to repair. The new power unit will save the society and its working members a vast amount of money and man hours repairing the old unit. The new engine was installed in the loco in October 2007 and work was done to try and get the first start up of D8233 for over 25 years. The air starter motors were overhauled but sufficient air could not be found to start the power unit. This set back casued the generator overhaul to be stepped up and in late 2009 the generator was sent of to Dowding and Mills for overhaul. The Auxiliary generator will require re-varnishing and stoving and the Main generator needs the inter-poles looking at as well as a lot of other poblems fixing. All of this will not be cheap and a price of around £20k has been estimated. A proportion of all of the sales of these models go to helping the C15PS restore the generator to be able to start he power unit and continue restoration of this unique loco. To find out more about the generator overhaul and donate to the society please visit http://www.d8233.org.uk/generator.htm . |
