Shed Code: 86 A Built to order No.E497 at Crewe in October 1958. Allocated originally to 86A Newport (Ebbw Junction') moving in November 1958 to Old Oak Common, the final shed being 81C Southall. 92006 was most likely to have commenced working life hauling heavy steel trains or coal trains out of South Wales and/or iron ore trains into the South Wales area for the steelworks. Other duties were undoubtedly rostered, such as on 25 May 1963 she passed through Leicester on the GCR hauling a bogie bolster 'block' train carrying steel rods or strip. The 9F became the most popular of the Standard Classes on the Western Region with the crews, despite some initial resistance to their introduction. However, the WR set itself the objective of being the first of the British Railways' regions to dispense with steam power in favour of dieselisation. Many 9F's were withdrawn prematurely in their working lives including recently-constructed locomotives out-shopped from Swindon.
